But it came in with the upper hand, as Pauli’s is better known for its lobster roll. THE WINNER: Monica’s, for its razor-thin, high-quality cured meats and dense house-baked bread. Monica’s: Crusty bread didn’t get soggy en route to the office prominent balsamic flavor provolone was as sharp as an old sock (in a good way). Pauli’s: Spicy pickles and oregano hit the palate first a cut above what you’d get at the corner bodega nearly translucent red-onion slices. ![]() Monica’s: Thirty minutes on a weekday at lunchtime. Pauli’s: Five minutes on a weekday at lunchtime. Monica’s: Prosciutto, mortadella, salami, provolone. The sizes may seem small, but trust me, a little goes a long way…it’s chocolate heaven.Pauli’s: 65 Salem St., 85,. I love throwing on a few layers, grabbing a cup of the oh-so-rich, but oh-so-delicious French Hot Chocolate, and taking a seat on the sidewalk patio of the Thinking Cup’s Newbury Street location for some good ol’ people watching! This hot chocolate is comprised of 64% Tainori Valhrona drinking chocolate, which basically equates to it being really, really good. They also host artists and authors, so make sure to check their calendar for upcoming events. Beyond books and hot cocoa, Trident serves up delicious brunch fare, frappes, and fresh juices all of which I’d recommend. This indie café and bookshop is a Newbury Street original, and even after 30+ years in business, it still draws quite the crowd! While I love coming here to peruse their book selection, a visit is never complete without grabbing a cup of their White Chocolate Hot Chocolate. White Chocolate Hot Chocolate at Trident Booksellers & Cafe Oh, and don’t miss the churros, which in my opinion, are the perfect hot chocolate dipping dessert! 100 Hanover Street, Boston, MA 02108 You can choose the type of chocolate, milk, flavor, and toppings (think fresh whipped cream or marshmallows!). Using only the best stone ground chocolate, the Taza staff aka chocolate baristas will work with you to customize the hot chocolate of your dreams. If you are a self-proclaimed chocoholic, head over to the Boston Public Market and the Taza Chocolate Bar. While the shop and cafe are often bustling with college students and tourists, I still find it to be the perfect respite on a chilly day. Fun fact: Caffé Vittoria, which opened in 1929, was the first Italian café in Boston! 290 Hanover Street, Boston, MA 02113 Take a seat by the window, order a cup of their Cioccolatto Caldo and a delicious cannoli, and you’ll find yourself instantly transported to a café in Rome. This charming Hanover Street café is one of the cutest in the city, and wow, do they make a delicious hot chocolate! I love coming here on a lazy Sunday with friends or as a sweet ending to a date night in the North End. ![]()
